Maintenance of common areas by owners is not unusual

Question: We live in a gated community that has an HOA and a POA. We live in a quad that has four homes, and shares a common area that we do not own. That common area now needs to be repaired, and the four homeowners must share the cost of repairing it. There are other common areas here that the owners are not responsible to maintain.
