A good way to plan for the future of your web site is to start building an annual budget for it. Publications have budgets. Ad campaigns have budgets. A budget isn’t just a dollar amount thrown down on a spreadsheet, but it is a plan of what it will cost to do what you want to do. I would venture to say, 20 years plus into the lifetime of the Web, that most organizations do not really budget for their web site, either annually or longer term. They throw a dollar amount – usually a dollar amount that somebody came up with once and hasn’t been reviewed for accuracy or value since – and it becomes the official cost, year after year.
