Each year, an average of ten tropical storms develop over the Atlantic Ocean, Caribbean Sea, and Gulf of Mexico. While many of these storms remain over the ocean, about six will typically strengthen into hurricanes, with two reaching major hurricane status with winds greater than 110 mph.
