Virginia common interest communities (property owners’ associations, condominium associations, cooperatives, and time-shares (individually, “CIC”, and collectively, “CICs”)), are subject to the federal Fair Housing Amendments Act of 1988 (“FHA”) and the Virginia Fair Housing Law (“VFHL”). Together, the FHA and VHFL prohibit discriminatory housing practices against individuals based on their race, color, religion, sex, national origin, familial status, handicap or disability, and the VFHL provides additional protection to individuals based on their elderliness, sexual orientation, gender identity or status as a veteran.
